greg_r 81 Posted February 7, 2011 Having read all the rave reviews of the new PAM177 (made by the same factory as the 288), I just had to have one, so ordered this from Robert about 10 days ago. I picked it up from the post office last Sat and it's been on my wrist ever since. We all by now know about the limitations of the movement on this model - the rep uses an Asian 6497, which works beautifully, offers bomb-proof reliability and looks not at all like the gen. Nobody but me is ever going to see the movement, so who cares...? Having gotten that out of the way, there's a lot to like. The titanium case is great - it feels like real quality and is a nice even colour. Unlike the earlier 'badger's arse' versions, there are no rough edges either. I've not had a gen 177 in my hands, so can only be vague about the comparison, but it both looks and feels right to me - this whole watch has a gen-like feeling of quality to it. The CG is probably the best I've ever seen in a rep. The pin is flush and the lever is a very good fit with no unsightly gaps between lever and CG. The crown is nice and thick - looking like the gen to me. The sapphire crystal has excellent AR with no funky tint to it and the dial is crisp and clear, the indices being, unusually, the correct off-white colour like the gen. The lume is outstanding - again of gen quality - being both bright and long lasting (as it should be given that it's super luminova). The strap was a nice surprise. Most dealers have been supplying this with the standard rep rubber strap. Although the rep rubber is nice quality, I have to confess that I dislike rubber in general ( ) so had been planning to replace the band pretty quickly. However, it turned out to be unnecessary as Robert shipped this watch fitted with probably the best rep strap I've ever seen - similar quality to the straps supplied by Getat and of the sort of standard that you're not going to beat without going for a hand-made strap from curahee or Bob Bean. All in all, I'm extremely impressed - this watch has been on my wrist for three days now and joins my PWC Fiddy as being a real favourite. I'll certainly be looking out for more models in this series - if they're going to be of this kind of quality, they'll be well worth having. Anyhow, enough of this drivel.
