ww12345 0 Posted February 12, 2011 I am getting ready to do an order, and I saw that Josh offers both refurbished and Asian ETAs. Which would be better? I seem to remember hearing that the Asian ETA+service was better than the Swiss, but I had a further question: Could I swap the Asian ETA stateside for a new Swiss ETA? If so, could the datewheel be swapped? I am looking at a vintage SD, and it has a silver datewheel vs. the regular white one. What movement number would I need? ETA 2834? Here are the watches I am looking at. As usual, open them in new tabs twice... http://www.1-pc8838.com/rlsdv01002-vintage...836-p-7599.html http://www.1-pc8838.com/rlsdv01012-vintage...846-p-8529.html Thanks in advance! Luthier 1 Posted February 13, 2011 ETA 2846 has 21 jewel, and it stated on the rotor. But in description - 17 jewels. Strange. I'd go for clone.
KBH 7 Posted February 13, 2011 I bought the 2836 version before the other lo-beat model came out. Then I sourced a 2846-2 and had it serviced by Speedy before I installed it. Kind of did it the hard way. So, you know which way I'd go. Great watch to mod though. It does take gen crystal and bezel if you go that way. I ended up with a Clark crystal because the original one had a small crack when I got it and leaked. With the new crystal it passed 3 atm. pressure test. I think the early 2846 was 17j. Maybe there are still some of them around and that's why he listed them that way. Yes, the date wheel could be swapped. Clone and Eta are same.
Brightlight 0 Posted February 13, 2011 Swiss 2846 came in 17J and 21J versions - http://www.ranfft.de/cgi-bin/bidfun-db.cgi...wk&ETA_2846 Not sure about the clone though as it's just a 2836-2 with different balance wheel, pallet fork and escapement wheel (as far as I am aware) to give it low beat, the gear train appears to be identical. ww12345 0 Posted February 15, 2011 I didn't realize, but searching on Esslinger brings up the fact that 2842 is like the lowest of the ETA movements. Would it be fitting to swap out the Asian ETA 2836 with the Swiss ETA 2836 from Esslinger? I don't know what this would do about the beat rate, though...May make it too fast.
