fatarms 7,777 Posted December 21, 2016 First off, I'm going to steal one of NCRich's photos of the before shot, since I didn't take one before starting the project. I'm kinda going for this look, I guess? Took things apart and worked the hands and dial so far. Insert was lightly sanded to remove the shiny coating and is now soaking in a Red Solo cup o'bleach. Used nothing more than shaved pastels so far, the kind my wife uses for her art stuff. Kind of just expensive chalk. Mixed up a little powdered white and black to make a gray that I thought looked kind of close to the target above. The problem is that the dial is almost pearlesque and not white, so it shows up a little differently. First powder coating applied and pushed into the dial with a small paint brush: Then sprayed it with a pastel and pencil drawing fixative. The kind of stuff artists use to keep chalk/pencil drawings from smudging. After this dried, I used a thumbtack and lightly scored the dial to try to mimic the scratches in the gen dial above. Applied a second layer of the powdered pastel. Here's where we are so far. Calling a night for this project: Think it may need a few more powder coats... NCRich 13,748 Posted December 21, 2016 I think it looks good. I believe you are right about more coats if you want to mimic that gen dial. Nice work though.
