Restoring original color of a (buffalo) strap

My softer straps, like for example light coloured buffalo straps seem to get darker (on the outside) due to regular wear.

 

I was wondering if there is a way to restore and/or keep the original, lighter, color of such a strap?

There are some special sprays for this purpose, perhaps you can share with us some pics so we can see its condition.

Do these sprays

1. prevent a strap from discoloring or

2. restore the original color of the strap or

3. both?

As promised, a picture which shows the darkening of a (buffalo) strap over time. Hope it visualises what I mean.

 

The left picture shows the strap after a few days of wear and the right picture shows the strap color about 3 weeks later.

 

I would like to restore/retain the lighter 'sand color' of the strap.

clean it in soft soaped water

Soap and water? Really? It's that easy?

 

All I constantly did was preventing it from getting wet when washing my hands...

It could be dirt which comes off with soap and water but if it's oil collected from everyday sweating from your wrist then it is unfortunately more permanent. Funny enough a coat of leather sealing/protector oil will slightly darken as in your case but will make it waterproofed and more dirt resistant them original. It will be slightly polished in the process also. Or you can go with suede protector sprays which generally do not discolor but will waterproof it also.
