Noob Factory Submariner - V7 or V8?

Recommended Posts

SheikhRashid

I've decided that I'm going to purchase a Noob Factory Rolex Submariner, now it comes to the tough choice of deciding which model to pick.

From my research, here is the list of pros and cons.

Why V7>V8

  • Cheaper
  • Can choose ETA 2836 movement which is more reliable and easier to source parts
  • Smoother feeling edges according to this review

Why V8>V7

  • Better feeling bracelet according to this review
  • Improved bezel insert according to this review
  • 904L steel, which is the same as genuine

That's all I've been able to find so far. Any other information from you guys?

Also need to decide whether I should go for a Hulk or black, but I'll leave that till later

A2836 or A2824 whenever possible is what I live by.  No difference between the inserts.  You're paying for the "Rolex" (lol) movement and the 904 steel which is basically indistinguishable with the V7.  The thing is, the insert engravings are too dark in low light and almost disappear.  It's amazing to me that they can get a clone movement in these things but can't get the fucking bezel insert engravings right.  You'd think after 8 tries, they'd at least make some kind of progress...

904L but not as genuine, it's the cheaper 904L on the market.

Rolex chose to use this variety of steel (SAE 904L grade stainless steel) because it takes a higher polish than other grades of steel and provides greater corrosion resistance, though it does not machine as well and requires specialized equipment to be properly modified into the required shapes.
Replica market have not really this kind of specialized
equipment, cause it's extremely expensive.

Strange 2fake4u has lab results testing ARF 904l bracelet links versus Rolex standards and the results showed it was the same....

Please tell us more about your scientific research ?

If I recall correctly, his test only showed that the ARF model was indeed 904L low grade but not compared them with a gen Rolex.

Damn that's a good price!

Ideally looking for one with an SA3135 movement though as heard the A2836 can be a bit loud.

Only going by what I've read in reviews.

Also heard there's a problem with the date wheel lining up perfectly on the A2836.

Again, this is just what I've learnt from reviews.

Datewheels can be a challenge. Movements vary in the noise they make. Not just on subs.

If I may give a perspective:

Reps vary. One can be loud (but really, that's not the right adjective). One can be quiet. Same watch, same movement. Different sound. I have a lot of A2824/36 (very similar movements) and none of them have been as noisy as some other different types of movement.

One datewheel overlay or printing can be slightly off, the next batch (or watch) can be perfect. If you ever try and fit an overlay you will exactly understand that.

Partly, the way to start this hobby is by reading like you obviously have, which is great and it's what we always ask of a noob.

The other part is knowing that you need a bit of luck because of the random nature of reps and the fact that you can't just send it back.

That's why I always give my main piece of advice:

Write off the money you spend on a rep and be happy when the watch arrives and works. If you can't afford that, then buy a Seiko for the same money from Amazon or a local shop.

I hope you find what you are looking for.

I ended up getting a silver fine tip sharpie and slowly filling in the numbers on the bezel on my nv7.  I used a micro fiber cloth to wipe away any excess sharpie that got on the ceramic portion. It wiped right off but made the engraved numbers brighter. I was worried the sharpie would permanently be on the bezel but the cloth took it off well. that being said the a2824 movement has been perfectly accurate and I'm really happy with it. I would save some cash and get the V7 with a sharpie mod or platinum paint mod.

Agreed. This V thing is so very sad.

I have a V4 (or was it 5?) which was KeNnY's with his lume. I have never spent the time trying to work out the 'flaws'. Looks like a rep sub to me. Like all of them do, including the gens.

All fantastic advice, except possibly this.

I'd have been the first to say get a Seiko, except recently there seems to have been/is a lot of quality issues. A lot of reports of samurais with crown alignment issues, and the recent 62mas Prospex reimaginings seem to have dial/chapter-ring/bezel alignment issues. These are not exactly cheap Seiko's!
