Luthier 1 Posted November 25, 2008 (edited) From Rolex: "...fills and protect it immediately..." I have gen. SS DayDate for many years, and the case has many hair thin scratches, almost invisible, but it's a scratches, so, I think steel is not a live organism, and mechanical damage can't be repaired by steel itself. AllergyDoc 40 Posted November 25, 2008 SS DayDate? Rolex only made a handful of those. If yours is really SS it must be old and thus 316L steel, not 904L.
alphakazi 0 Posted November 25, 2008 not filling the whole depth of the scratch in a scratch exposes fresh chromium which then oxidizes (chromium oxide) effectively protecting the metal - see... it's alive! all it means it 904L has a higher chromium level and the layer of chromium oxide around the case protects the metal - marketing gimmick? I don't know enough about metallurgy to say

RolexAddict 1 Posted November 25, 2008 (edited) I don't like the new Rolex made with 904L SS. To white and to shinny. Especially Oyster bracelets who looks -imho- like cheap nickel platted. former 316L gen looks nice, plus if you go to the sun and salt water, the metal coloration changes a little and get a nice patina Same for reps, my reps who goes in see water turned into a very nice patina Edited November 25, 2008 by RolexAddict

trailboss99 996 Posted November 25, 2008 I do think 904L is a sales tool. Unless you are wearing your rollie on the outside of a chem suit at the acid plant I see no more benifit from 904L than having a 2000ft dive watch. It's the percived cache (that's not how you spel it is it?) of having a watch that can withstand anything that is it's reason for being (the french is beond me ATM). MY torture test noob is still alive. I supose I had beter do a new post on the poor old thing now we're back. It's latest test was being on the arm holding a block of wood to one side of some 4mm plate while I belted the other with a 2lb hammer to remove some dents. Didn't phase it and Rolex wouldn't recomend that! I know the case is paint stripper proof. Had to get the two pack overspray off somehow . . . Col.
