Submariner 116610LN ZZF time stops

Recommended Posts

I have the submariner From ZZF with the Asian Clone 2836-2. Just received it. If I wind the movement  in the am (50-75) times and wear it all day it will stop late evening while still wearing it. I tried winding and just letting sit over night on night stand in the morning it is keeping perfect time. I did not wind it, instead in the morning I shook it a lot and placed it back down. I then just left it their and shook it side to side a couple time that day. Same next day sitting on the night stand shook a couple times throughout the day and did not even wind but it kept time. Finally on th third morning I noticed it had stopped several hours earlier over night.

I wound it another 75 times set the date, shook it vigorously and started wearing it again and it stopped about 18 hours later (I had not wound or vigorously shaken during wearing it).
do I have a bad movement? Am I doing something wrong?  TD offered to send back and they would service or replace but waited and don’t want it to be she so long doing that option.  Getting it serviced local is $100 and then waterproofing is another $60 so if I can avoid that with some tips that would be great.

thanks in advance for any support!

when it is stopped can you get it going by just moving the watch ?

If not then the auto wind is not working properly either use it as a manual wind only or it will need a repair

You could open it up and check that the rotor is spinning freely. If not then there’s your answer. May be as simple as tightening a screw.

If rotor is all good, check that all the wheels in the autowind mechanism move when the rotor spins. The autowind mechanism is very easy to understand and screws straight off the movement without removing anything else (or even needing to pull the movement out) if you needed to fix it. Parts are cheap and easily available.

It sounds like it’s just the rotor not moving freely though. Could be as simple as tightening a screw.

Thanks I will first check when it is stopped if shaking gets it moving again!

If I take the back off it will then not be waterproof

I wouldn't trust any replica watch to be waterproof.

So it just stopped and when shaken it does begin ticking again

Exactly. You’re asking for even more trouble if you believe the factory statements on water resistance. The same person who didn’t screw your rotor on properly also wasn’t that bothered about checking the seals were all correctly in place.

Can you hear the rotor spinning when you shake it (hold it next to your ear).

Yes I can hear the rotor spinning when it is shaken. It is actually loud, almost grinding.

That’s what I thought. The rotor is moving with a vigorous shake but not moving freely (grinding) thus not moving during normal wear.

You can make it more waterproof when you open it by rubbing some silicon grease on the o-ring and ensuring it’s seated properly. Whatever method you use to open it has the potential to close it at least as firmly as it was...or it wouldn’t have been able to open it. But you still cannot rely on it being waterproof, there’s many places water may be able to enter.

@Flinnt does that mean the rotor screw tightened would likely be the fix?

Intresting

I have had a similar issue with a DSSD.    I am fortunate enough to have a good service guy who can look at it.   He has found the rotor and movement to be full of grit and crap and preventing the auto winding from moving properly.  If its a watch you really like the look of, it might pay to get ti serviced by a good chap, clean, dust, oil and reduce the sound of the rotor (they are reps) and waterproof it at the same time.   Unless you are one of the highly skilled inmates here who seem to be able to do everything themselves except jump off tall buildings with their underwear on the outside...

I think I will go the route of having it serviced proper! Thank you all for the info!

I’m thinking either rotor screw or the movement mounting screw getting in the way of rotor.

But if you’re prepared to pay for service then do that so you know the movement is cleaned and oiled throughout then.

I have a similar problem with my 116610 that's running a 2813. Looks like I'll open it up myself to see what's happening inside before I decide to do anything that needs $$$ :D

Is the price from local WS I was quoted $100 service and $60 to waterproof and test a reasonable fee?

$100 to service it is reasonable. The added $60 seems odd. My watchmaker includes water testing in the service. He only charges me additional if he has to replace a gasket.

I agree with Ksolid21. $100 for a service is good. $60 to waterproof is strange. During the service it’s just a matter of inspecting the gaskets to make sure there’s no splits and they’re in good condition and if so rubbing some silicon grease on them. If a new gasket is required they’re very cheap. Then test it and if all is good he’s done. 2 mins extra of checking and greasing and a few minutes testing.

If it doesn’t pass the test then he’s going to have to remove the crystal and possibly replace crystal gasket and maybe use a glue of some sort to seal around the crystal gasket if a new gasket doesn’t solve the problem so this will cost more. But if it’s not required that fee seems strange. It should be quoted as ‘it depends on whether the crystal needs sealing or not...cheap if it doesn’t, significant fee (maybe $60) if it does. That’s how I would think about it anyway.

Thanks for the advice! I will have details to negotiate with now.

You shouldn't "shake" any mechanical watch.

Wind it by the crown, autowind it with normal usage.

If that doesn't work, give it to a specialist.
