Rolex paradox

So many people have fake Rolex watches that you almost assume anyone wearing one is wearing a fake. Does that help or hurt the replica industry?

Good point, but for me it's the opposite: I think that every Rolex I spot it's gen :fear:

I'd rather have a Tudor. And AP's look goofy.

If it's on someone else's wrist, it's too far away for me to tell.

But I probably couldn't anyway :giggle:

No fake Rolex watches on this forum.

We're all rich folk, socialising under pseudonyms.

Fake fakes are obviously harmful to the real fake industry - the fake fakers don't have any of the overheads associated with the legit fakers businesses,  they do no R & D, they have no respect for intellectual property rights and produce low quality copies of the real fakes - it's damaging for the real fake industry industry and it's image.

This is probably true, but I do really like the subie anyway and I’ve worked out my weekly savings to get one for my 40th. Then everyone can think that’s fake too :pointlaugh:

Personally I think assumption of any Rolex being fake begins with a general judgement of the person wearing it. For example if a 13 year old riding a Huffy bike is rocking a Rolex, one might assume it’s a knockoff. If a well put-together 25-95 year old was wearing one with no obvious tells, the general public would assume it’s real. I don’t think it’s safe to say every time someone sees your Rolex they’ll assume it’s fake.... unless they know you live paycheck to paycheck or your caught using your food stamps at the grocery store.

Warren Buffet drives a 2014 Cadillac XTS. You can’t tell by looking at him, his clothes, his car, or where he eats (McDonald’s three times a week).  You can tell little a about a person from observation

Valid points on both sides of that fence.  I think the fine line between those are the character, style and actions of one's self

I like the looks of my Rolies. I can’t afford most of the real ones I want. I like em, fake or not, so I don’t care what others think ;). Most of the world doesn’t notice your watch and those that do couldn’t tell you what maker it is. It’s a small percentage that make up true watch aficionados that would have the skill and knowledge to judge the watch on your wrist.

It has no bearing on the replica industry, supply and demand of genuine watches affects the replica industry

I think this is absolutely true.  No one notices my Gen DJ.  And not one notices my reps.  It's just perception...one needs to enjoy reps for what they are and how much its enjoyed for a timekeeper or design execution...that is all.

I don’t think people do immediately assume a Rolex is fake. These days I’d say it’s more likely to be on a payment plan. I bought a TC a few years ago with the intention of later buying a gen, in the end I didn’t bother. As a lot of people say on here, the increase in price for a few % improvement isn’t worth it, I’d call it the sensible option. Many people who buy a gen are likely to be paying £150-200 a month for the next 5 years. Personally, I don’t Like the sound of that.

Popperini

Mrs. Popperini (being the talented member of the family) does art, and sells it in galleries. She was at one of her exhibitions recently, and the only person to comment on the watch she was wearing (a BP serti Sub) , was a very wealthy customer. She said something like, "What a lovely Rolex. You must be selling a lot of paintings..."

Assumptions are largely driven by environment and expectations. The rich lady didn't have any reason to question whether Mrs. Pop's Rolie was real or not - it wouldn't have crossed her mind. And in the situation, Mrs. Pops didn't feel compelled (like she normally does) to blurt out, "Oh, it's just a fake one - my husband gets them from China!" Instead she took the compliment and couldn't wait to tell me how her watch had fooled them. :)
