no_sauce_man 14 Posted June 9, 2020 I've been toying with the notion of getting another Explorer I with the intention of having it plated with rose gold, inspired by this rendering I saw. Apparently this site will do it to reps, too; https://www.watchplating.com/ . Anyone have any experience with them? I'm not sure how thin the plating/deposition goes on, could I strip the lume off the indices and have them plated too? Personally I think it would make a killer dress watch

MAJ75 922 Posted June 9, 2020 For my fellow UK based members I have looked into this for a project I was planning, but the ones I found so far cannot plate stainless steel watches.... if anyone finds someone who can please let me know....
FunnyStarSystem 7,538 Posted June 9, 2020 That is a great look! Imagine spelunking in a solid gold watch I recall someone starting a thread a few years ago about going in together as a forum ($?) and buying a plating system. It got rather technical. Anyone remember that?

I'm going to shoot this 'Watch Restoration Specialists' company an email and ask about some details, I think I read on their website that they can do SS. Fingers crossed! no_sauce_man 14 Posted June 10, 2020 @BADBILLY I have to say, a rosy sub does look quite striking...and when I have an extra grand burning a hole in my pocket I might just have to make this rose gold Explorer happen. See, I've got a hidden fetish for traditional dress watches, and I think a modified Explorer would hit the niche I crave perfectly. 39mm, reasonably thin, contemporary styling, restrained rose gold, no date to ruin the balance. If I could get my hands on the fantasy rep with the white dial, I could make the penultimate modern dress watch. All the cronies at the business luncheon would be struck blind by awe and jealousy. Now, to find that extra $1,000...
Dr Fun Socks 76 Posted June 10, 2020 Flying-tommy over on rwi does a great job with rose gold plating. I think its about €500 including domi disassembling and reassembling the watch.
GenTLe 1,510 Posted June 10, 2020 When I was caressing the idea of plating my Breguet I contacted a company here in Italy that does that. No problem plating SS they said. The cost depends on the micron of plating. It was around 50€ for a 3 micron plate and around 120€ for a thick 10micron plating. Of course the watch should be sent them completely unassembled and only the parts that should have been plated should have been sent to them. The company was this one: http://www.orogalvanica.it/
no_sauce_man 14 Posted June 11, 2020 The order form on their website comes out to around $550 for the case and bracelet, sounds pretty reasonable for a thick, 10 micron plating IMO.
Mary Watch 205 Posted June 11, 2020 some guy can do full wrapped gold for case and bracelet, about $300, thick wrapped.
