Aside from the suggestions above, then I've always liked the dimensions and looks of the Nth subs. Still not bought one yet, but assume that will happen at some point!

This, especially if buying gen. All the quality and an in-house movement for a fraction of the price. Yet unique enough to hold it's own.

That being said, most diving watches on the market are inspired by the sub in one way or another. Another option is the Omega Planet Ocean.

Just for my pennies worth... my favourite non Rolex subs are:

Omega, Tudor, Ginault and Steinhart....

however there are a plethora of subs out in the wilderness :)

You mean a sterile Ali/Dhg watch for a further project?

No.  If you have Rolex on the dial the assumption is it's a fake.  So happy to have Steinhart, or Sterile or anything else, as long as, if called out, I can show the watch up close and show it's not a Rolex

What about Invicta.....  I know their not liked by some  but they're cheap and reliable, my pro diver never missed a beat.

So Ginault wins it for the best watch  inspired by 5-digits sub.
MK II Kingston or Nassau if you want something older, something inspired by the-big-crown.

Steinhart has lots of sub-inspired watches but after a closer inspection you can tell they went into a little bit to the fantasy way.

Or, used Invicta 8926ob (Seiko calibre) as a base watch ad mod it into any direction you want. On WUS there is a huge thread with tens of hundreds of modded 8926's.

I think a Firehouse sub is best.
Or at least one that looks on f373b8fed5868f93e0466162df545994.jpg

In this case get a Ginault or a Steinhart. Ginault is TC so will be outstanding. Stienhart build quality for the money is superb too.

Note that while it’s not fake, you can show it up close but an arsehole that wants to call someone out will also be the arsehole that will say “so you couldn’t afford a Rolex” to a homage.
