Patek Philippe delivered to Nazi P.O.W. camp....

A cool little story from the New York Times about a US POW who had his Patek Philippe delivered to him at a camp.

I can't even begin to imagine how the track & trace would work.....

Blimey, I would never expect a money-is-everything watch co to do something nice like that, although I'm sure they had considered the press interest...

This sounds like the famous "Great Escape" story where the British POWs ordered Rolex Oyster watches which were sent to them by Rolex, to be paid for after the war. It was the same prison camp. One of these Rolexes was used in the "Great Escape" and was later sold at auction for $600k. Amazing the German commandant allowed delivery of these watches.

Yup, been trying to find details on the Rolex story for some time on behalf of a Rolex historian. Not much to go on, even Rolex have very little info on these acts of kindness. I have scans of two receipts from Rolex stating delivery to the camp and "payment deferred until end of hostilities" but bugger all else concrete.

the Germans allowed it because delivery was via the Red Cross and also because they did not like pissing off the Swiss.
