I'm torn!

Long story short. Got an offer on a brand new gen Tag watch that's nearly a grand less than the cheapest price I can find it. It's a quartz chronograph but that's by the by really

To justify the cost I'd probably look to sell 4 of my cheaper gens. All autos and all very very good watches for the money I paid for them.

What would you do?

Post nut clarity is real

Edit: I would do what you want though OP, if it's a watch you've been eyeing for awhile could be worth selling some others to fund it if it will bring you happiness :)

If you like the watch, upgrading is a good thing

Depends if you like the Tag you're just tempted because it's a gen at a good price.

If it's the latter you'll end up moving it on at some point and may regret parting with the others.

I've a couple of gen tags and can say they are brilliant.

If you would be tempted to buy it at rrp and its at a g off I'd go for it as long as you cna afford it and love it. I had 1500 quid in a Gen f1 and just couldn't justify it I wear my rep f1 loads and it is so close to gen I wouldn't consider buying a Gen f1 now

.... Here's just some food for thought, I don't know what model you're looking at specifically but there are replicas of some of the quartz tags which are extremely good.   I have one and it has the same Ronda movement as genuine.   The question you have to answer for yourself is do you like having the ability to select from a number of watches or just having one watch? I don't think I could go the rest of my life without having some variety to choose from just like I've always had variety from the time I was a child with my watches. Below I post the picture of my replica tag. As mentioned above their super close to the genuine.  Mine I have pressure tested and it has been in the pool many times. Since it has the same movement as the genuine to me there is no justification for getting a genuine but that's my opinion.

When buying a gen there is one simple rule.

Dial says Heuer = Buy it

Dial says Tag = DON’T.

Sorry but you've always been one to know a bargain over all the years I've known you on here.

I think deep down you'll know your probably buying a watch that wont sell and isn't worth RRP and will tank on the used market.

As I say classic Heuers are good and hold value. Tag nah.

Unpopular opinion Tag’s are one step up from invicta, for people who want to say they own a luxury gen but don't want to jump in at the price level.

Personally feel you are asking because that doubt is there!

Will you miss anything you sell to aspire for a new watch? …. Yes, sure … we all do …. But alas, things move on … and like many watches before you may find that you tire of a new Tag  as something else pops up on the horizon …  .. everything is temporary …. and sometimes we change watches like shoes ….. …. additionally, is it likely that anything you sell on would be available again to purchase in your future should the funds and opportunity be made available… ..  so, if you just fancy the Tag watch  … that’s enough ….. you don’t have to justify it ….. and so you sell your others to fund it and move on and enjoy it … because this is what your preference is at this time …. or not … :thumbsup2:

Deju said it much more eloquently than I. Even getting it at $1,000 off of the MSRP you'll probably still take a significant hit when you get tired of it and want to sell it. Let's just say there's a reason that you're being offered it it's such a discount. Just curious still what model are you looking at?

I would presume it's some kind of Tag Formula 1  Chronograph, some of them are really very beaufitul, for example the Gulf version, or the colored variants of the Formula 1 are really good looking

Tag have models that span a wide range of price brackets. The issue is people buy the cheap ones and expect same quality as the top tier. Not gonna happen.

They make some fantastic watches but people need to realise you get what you pay for in that respect. Of course an entry level formula one isn't going to have the same build quality and tolerances as a Tag costing five times that.

I get what you're saying to a degree but the Invicta thing is just talking shite.

My two Penneth -

Check the second hand ones out on chrono 24 etc to make sure that it really is a bargain. 40% off rrp is about right, which means the sellers will lose about 50%off rrp after all the fees n stuff. Tag AD mark-up is around 40% I am told.

I think that half the non-watch blokes in your local  pub wear a quartz Tag …, very few have the vintage gens or micro-brands that you have researched and coveted over the years. Selling old favourites can be a dispiriting exercise and they rarely achieve the price you expect.

If I have to meet or do business with anyone who turns up with a Quartz Tag I might think … nice watch. If he is wearing a vintage gen or micro brand favourite I think … top fella.

Judgemental I know but we all notice what the guy is wearing and take a view. Maybe it’s just a watch person’s view but I reckon most people on here do it. Tags are reputedly favoured by younger peeps  and and petrol heads, I am neither but I still like em.

As the man says …. If it wasn’t in the sale and full price would you still be tempted?  If so u should find a way to get it, but knowing you as we do you will move it on sooner or later

My two cents... mechanical watches are cool. Quartz are really not.

I wouldn't sell any mechanical rep or gen, to fund any quartz, let alone a 'high-end' quartz. Movements are super cheap and IMO overly inflated prices for something with a $35 movement inside.

But I'm a mechanical movement snob.

Yeh you're all right. It's a Tag Aquaracer chrono. Cheapest retail I can find is £1850 and the eBay offer from the seller (a store) for a new one with tags is £899.

I'm getting caught up in the brand name frenzy and the San Martins/Seestern/Laco I'd have to shift are objectively "better watches"

I have seen a nice auto  Alpina for cheap though!

Longines VHP are might fine quartz watches. I'd take one of them over a cheap auto any day

Watch the loss on a Tag quartz.  As soon as you walk out of the shop, you've lost half you money!

IMGBB is down so can't post pics at the moment but lmwould have likely had to shift two San Martins and a Seestern plus find another 4 hundred odd quid to put towards a new gen Tag Aquaracer CAY111A.BA0927 for £899.

The offer has expired now so I didn't succumb
