VS3235 Losing time

Just thought I’d tell you all about an issue I had with a VSF Starbucks I bought next door. The listing said it was losing time (up to 5min/hr) and sure enough it was… up until the point the hands stopped moving altogether.
I checked the timing as the seconds hand was still sweeping nicely and the timegrapher showed +/- 2-5 sec per day. This could only mean the cannon pinion was slipping.

To get to the cannon pinion, I had to remove the dial and hands as well as the date-bridge (which rather handily comes off without having to interfere with the datewheel etc).

Sure enough, the cannon pinion had hardly any friction and slipped right off. I then used a staking set to pinch the tube a little more to create a tighter fit (with a broaching file inside the tube). It is a very delicate procedure as you don’t want to crush the tube but you do need to pinch just enough. Some people use nail clippers to achieve the same result, but as I have the correct tools…

Anyway, it’s keeping perfect time now and is all sorted. Job done!
