My Rolex Explorer 1 project

Recommended Posts

So I bought this watch on RG. The previous owner had already "vintaged" the casing and crystal, but I always felt that the dial and hands looked to new.

I have never experimented with watch modding and am a total noob in that field....

So please have this in mind. ;)

Well it is... pretty darn vintage:

And finally a tampered lume shot, because I am so awesome!

What do you all think?

Looks good K. Just one comment if you're striving for perfection though. The tritium lume on my gen sub, circa 1987, is non-existant now.

what you mean is that it doesn't glow anymore?

I think I'll leave as is. I'm afraid I'll ruin it if mess with it again. :thumbsup2:

Love the Explorer by the way - a Rollie vintage project is somewhere in my future. I was thinking of a "fantasy-vintage" SDDS - make it look like it is forty years old....

Would like to see that. It's actually quite fun aging watches :beer2:

But John, do they even make a homage SDDS? hehehe

No, but you can sterilize any dial...

But seriously, would like to buy one of Reg's cheapie vintage subs and do it up cool - bang up/polish/bang up case, scratch dial, cig smoke to dial, bleached instert.... Saw one on RG - one of the real cheapies, looked GREAT. Could be a cool beater.

Then hurry up and buy one :beer2: I have 2 of these in the mail : SUB 1680

Will beat the hell out of it  But would be fun if we could share experiences and so on.

Now you've mentioned 'the other guy's' name does that mean you've initiated a truce?

The seal of aproval from a master Kinky. Well deserved too, that's a nice piece, well done.

I did a mini vintage on this one. Originally the hands and lume were bright white and looked stupid for a supposedly old watch. Not as vintaged as Kinky's. Also replaced the crystal with a vintage gen crystal from one of my Datejusts from the same era. It's had the scratches polished out but looks a lot better than the original one. At least it makes the cheapie rep wearable.
