This morning it stopped working, so I shook it some to get it going and reset the time, and now if I listen as I shake it (even just a little bit) I can hear noises coming from it

Sounds like something could be loose, possibly something with the movement.

As Sean has said it's most likely a rotor problem. :P

Here are the instructions for hand winders, you have to follow them to the "T"

i open most of my watches with the very good pliers on my leatherman, do the same if you want to check and arent to bothered by a few light scratches - providing you dont slip haha

When I first got my watch, I put it to my ear a lot. I learnt quickly not to.

Unless it stops working. Or it seems like something is loose/broken.

@tyrantblade

Are you sure it is not just a noisy rotor blade turning as you move the watch??

If so it is okay or needs oiled - but be careful if you do not know what you are doing and what oil to use.

Also - most watch backs come off easily with no scratches using a deflated soft small rubber ball (you can by one from this site) or a ball of rolled up duct tape or equivalent.

I would really not use pliers if you do not know what you are doing (and especially if you do :P)!

is the sound a "largeish" clunky sound?

or a small, rattley sound?

If it's a fat, squishy sound, you're in trouble as the hamster may have diarrhoea. Otherwise it's probably the rotor bearing you're hearing :)
