Adding Cracked Indices To Your Vintage Dial the DD Way

Recommended Posts

toomanywatches

This is an adjunct to the earlier dial painting tutorial, making your dial even more "Vintage." These are the items you need: Crackling agent, finished dial and fine applicator/oiler (fine sewing needle will work)

With small amount of Glass Gallery crackle medium in container, apply compound to front of indices of finished dial:

Dial with crackle medium applied to all the indices/numbers:

Let dial dry for 30 minutes or more... With time more cracks will appear, so check periodically to decide at what point there are enough crackling of the indices:

Prepare some powdered color pencil pigment. Choose a color that contrasts enough with the color of indices. In this case I picked powdered white color pencil pigment to contrast with black lume/resin fill:

Apply with brush, pushing powdered pigment into cracks of the indices:

Brush/blow away excess powdered pigment from indices, do any touch up with other pigment to dial. Seal dial with light coat/spray of clear matte lacquer:

The final results of finished dial with cracked indices:

Another example of process... In this case, crackling compound allowed to dry for longer time (overnight) to give more cracking and larger cracks in the indices of the dial:
