I could cry

Recommended Posts

Akira

Thought I should share my misery with you

My 6263 with new T21 and freshly installed tube and gen 703 crown.

First day I have it back....

Trying to wind the watch and the stem breaks

Steve from DW-Watches was kind enough to check if he can supply a new stem for the discontinued movement B)

If he can't I might be fucked big time.....:suicide:

About the gen crown....I'll try my best to get the piece of stem outta there, otherwise I can throw it in the bin.

I could cry a little to be honest.

there is a technique to dissolve the stem from the crown... I can't remember what the solvent is... maybe ammonia?

Oh no... mate, I feel with you :) Hope everything turns out good in the end! And just a heads up: I couldn't even get the movement out of a watch, so you are actually quite talented B)

Sorry to hear about this, F. If you can't source a spare MM stem, you could try to find a stem for a Valjoux 23 or 72 (same part for either movement). You would want one in Tap 10 (0.9mm).

The problem is that I don't know whether a V23 stem would actually fit into the MM. It's been said that the two movements have zero interchangeable parts, despite similar appearances. That said, I can't believe the MM would have a bespoke stem. It's worth a shot, as a stem is not expensive.

Hey mates,

a watchsmith from RWGjr replied to my PM

the problem is not the stem, it looks like the CROWN has snapped, you will need a new crown, i am sure you will need a new crown

I don't quite understand what he means though.

Even if I get the stem out of the crown, you think it's fucked?

Steve also said it's possible to replace the part of the crown the stem screws in....any idea on that advice?

Moreover, is there glue I can use to make a stem stay inside a crown?

The DG stem of my 1675 won't stay inside the gen crown....it unscrews everytime.

Cheers

Akira

I use a super glue style, which the women use to attach their (false) nails for stems.

Had perservered with Locktite in all its incarnations, however the torque/load must be V high at that point, and I couldn't find anything to hold except this nail glue.

FWIW, if you are trying to use alum powder to eat the stem out of the crown, keep checking each day or so.

I left a Gerald Genta crown in for about 10 days..the stem had disappeared, however a new stem was very "sloppy" in the crown, so I suspect the female thread was also eaten a bit.

I finally used solder to fill out the thread area and some of the nail glue to attach the stem. (Was never really 100% but the alternative was about $700 for a GG crown!)

I would ask Freddy at RWG about that crown, he will know for sure.

O/S

Just went back and had another look at your pics...that sure looks like a bit of the crown on the end of that stem.

Try removing the stem, and see if that sleeve will unscrew off the stem....you will answer your own question then.
