A Blast from the Past: Part 1 [lots of pics]

Wiz

Hi!

Last Sunday I had the occasion - or more the chance - to be invited by a friend of my parents, who is a retired executive from the watch industry, and who agreed to give me a tour through his impressive ancient timepieces collection, and allowed me to take a few pics so I could share with you guys. :)

This is the part one: Clocks and Pocket watches.

The first piece is a L'Épée carriage clock, with moonphase, day, date and repeater. L'Épée is one of the greatest clock manufacture in the world, there even are some in the White House.

Next one is still a L'Épée clock, but a smaller model, with less complications.

Now the pocket watches:

Pocket watch with complications. Unfortunately I can't remember what he told me about it. ;)

Some Chronographs at the from row, from left to right: Omega, UT1, and Movado.

Some Movado "party" watches. What's funny about these watches is that opening and closing the case winds the watch.

This is one a the first true masterpiece of this collection. It's a Patek Philippe pocket watch from 1872, with the original paperwork!!

Gentlemen, that's not something you see everyday!

As you can see the movement is quite simple.

On to another true masterpiece. This is a pocket watch from 1706, made at the court of the king Louis XIV. At the time watches were not made in manufactures, watchmakers were coming to built the watches on site.

Before there were springs, pocket watches had their power delivered by a chain, pretty much like a bicycle chain.

That watch from 1706 is amazing, must have cost a fortune!

Amazing to think that most of the population was probably living in extremely poor accommodation and relying on the local church bells to tell the time!

Absolutely great article Wiz, and some beautiful pieces, :RIP:

I'm currently looking for a gold pocket watch with enamel dial, so that I can have lugs soldered on, turning it into a wrist watch, just can't find the right one, needs to be at least 16mm thick and approx 47mm, most I've seen are tatty and or out of price range.
