Build a Rolerai from a Molnija mvmt?

Recommended Posts

MadeOfCheese

Looking for a little advice here chaps...

Just bought a couple of cheap vintage russian watches on the bay with Molnija 3601 mvmts in them.

They're pretty cool vintage pieces on their own to be honest, but I had an idea about turning one of the movements into a nice aged rolerai.

Something with a 47mm radiomir case, aged dial (radiomir or rolex), plexi, and a glass caseback to see the nice movement.

Trouble is, both these movements have russian engraving on them, so this will need to be ground down before the "Rolex" and other markings can be engraved onto it.

So, 2 questions:

1) Is the removal and replacement of the engraving possible?

2) Can anyone recommend someone to do the work?

Thanks in advance guys

Cheese

.....and by the way, this will become an addiction that cost 3 times as much as the regular reps......

you will need:

case--$40.00 - $1200.00....yes, I wrote $1200!

brass ring movement holder--$25.00

modified stem -$25.00

dial--$100-$160.00

Hands--$25.00-$45.00

thick caseback--$50.00 - $75.00

Strap w/flat buckle--$85.00-$250.00

Plus whatever you paid for the movement......

There are some experts in this area found here:

You should ask DSN for a molly movement with engraving, or even buy the whole watch from him. (280$)

Note that the "Rolerai" should be in a 6154 case, not the stock vintage Radiomir case.

I hope one day to get mine back from BL:

Thanks guys, just registered at homageforum.

This is a lot to take in! I'm sure it will turn out to be yet another money pit, but I've realised thatI'm far more interested in the vintage look than the bright shiny new ones, and I think this is likely to become my new obsession!

As for authenticity, I'm not that bothered really, just want something that looks and feels really nice and...right.

In fact, the more I think about it the less I am concerned about the 'Rolex' engravings - I think a nice mish-mash could look really sweet and individual...

Thanks for all the advice, keep it coming!

Very nice! How do you order from DSN?

If you contact DSN - just remember to be as clear and concise as possible - his English is not fantastic, and communications can be challenging at times. Keep it simple, and use his pictures from his own album on photobucket to show him what you want. Once you are both on the same page, he is lightning fast, and his EMS shipping is fast as well - got from HK to Miami in 3 1/2 days!!!

Happy hunting!

You should be more than ok, then! Here is the link to DSN's photoalbum - lots of great ideas and components there...
