BadPickle 2,807 Posted January 30, 2013 Wow.... I got this book from amazon. Also got a pricking wheel, groover and diamond awl from eBay. Getting the right leather is an issue. Nice tip about WWii leather.
BadPickle 2,807 Posted January 30, 2013 Yeah pictures would help a ton. I think I am just going to try and saddle stitch one tonight to see how it comes out. Is that how you do most of yours? The book I bought shows how to do different types of stitching and what to use to put holes in leather. How to use a skiver to thin the leather. I've not had chance to put this knowledge to the test yet.
P4GTR 0 Posted January 30, 2013 Russell, in regards to your straps- a few tips... - strapmaking is very specific niche of leatherworking, a lot will be self taught unless you have someone to learn from (good luck w/ that!). -stitching is everything! you need to find the proper tension when you are pulling your stitches, yours are unevenly pulled. -you need a chisel with more tines on it, using only a 3 or 4 tine prick increases the chance to go off route. - you dont have to groove the strap, u can use a tool to scratch a straight line and follow that with your chisel. - set your stitches. Use a mallet to tap over your stitching when your done. - weld or glue thread that melts, tie and tuck thread that doesnt. Great work, good luck!
DeLaForce 2 Posted January 30, 2013 My first straps looked similar, I'd reccomend checking out timebandits tutorial, and practice lots with cheap belts from goodwill, keep going its great wearing you're own creations
Skrimps 3 Posted January 31, 2013 Just curious but where do you guys get your leather from and typically what size do you use, as in oz size?
Skrimps 3 Posted January 31, 2013 Took y'alls advice on stitching and came up with this last night. Not crazy about this leather since it shows wear and tear pretty pretty bad on it. I need to find a good place to get leather not to mention I need to find out what kinds of leather works best.

Skrimps 3 Posted February 4, 2013 I ended up finding a place that sales vintage boot leather and I am cutting it and dyeing it the color I want. The one with the name "unger" on it is not dyed though. That is just how the vintage leather looks.
