[TUTORIAL] Making Historical ROLEX DEEP SEA CHALLENGE ULTIMATE rep

aka Nessie reloaded

Hello all !

:)

So we have once again a BIG tutorial under our sleeve ! And yes it is about this BEAST ! The ROLEX DEEP SEA CHALLENGE ! I simply must had it when I saw it, It has got size, it has got presence, it has got weight ! But It lacks lume, waterproof capatibility and the movement needs regulation to be ONE HELL OF TIMEPIECE that I think it should be in every one watch fan collection, just because it is an ULTIMATE watch with a name of its OWN ! Even if owner will not wear it because of small wrist, really this is one amazing timepiece ! :)

So what we have done with our REP to make it more GEN LIKE

- COMPLETE RELUME with gen like superlume of dial, hands and pearl, removing old stock lume

- Recreating pearl to look more gen like

- Repaint of DEEP SEA CHALLENGE text of inner rehaut with black enamel paint

- Waterproofing case with gluing tube to the case and adding extra oring to the tube, gluing crystal with UV glue

- Regulating movement within COSC limits

- Greasing all orings and sealing the back

- WET Pressure test 4BARs

- Polishing small smudges on polished sides

So lets check our watch that we have from Factory.

DSC_4022.jpg

Looks good but the lume is totally dull….. What we will FIX !!! :)

DSC_4024.jpg

DSC_4025.jpg

So lets take the caseback off. I recommend to use sticky ball as we definitely don’t find correct dies for this caseback as it is much larger then DSSD one.

DSC_4026.jpg

I also noticed that I have a free screw running in movement and noticed it got off from near the winding gear and I was unable to wind the watch via crown, so this fixed the issue :)

DSC_4027.jpg

Here we can see the crown that has o ring what is good thing

DSC_4028.jpg

DSC_4029.jpg

Here you can see that we have 1 solid case piece not some lego build :(

DSC_4030.jpg

Here we can check the dial, sadly I think it is larger then the gen as the position of datewindow is totally different then the DSSD. Also the hands are a lot bigger.

DSC_4031.jpg

DSC_4032.jpg

Push back crown and position the hands together for easier removal.

DSC_4033.jpg

DSC_4034.jpg

DSC_4035.jpg

Here you can see the date font, it is not gen like, oh well, we can’t do nothing about that now.

DSC_4036.jpg

DSC_4037.jpg

DSC_4038.jpg

We have our dial, now to remove the back glue and push out the indexes. Put the indexes into ACETONE bath with hands and after the old lume dissolve relume them :)

DSC_4040.jpg

DSC_4041.jpg

Now lets get out that thick ass crystal :D but also remove the orings from tube

DSC_4042.jpg

DSC_4044.jpg

DSC_4046.jpg

You can see I used my “custom” die to compensate the big ass crystal, and also I don’t want to crack the bezel insert !

Here check that NICE THICK CRYSTAL ! :)

DSC_4047.jpg

DSC_4048.jpg

You see the border is brushed, so It was maybe filled down a bit to be used in watch :D

DSC_4049.jpg

Here we see the laser engraved text, that has not big space inside so I don’t know if repainting will help much, maybe only for 20-30% it will be more darker.

DSC_4050.jpg

Now remove the crystal tension ring.

DSC_4051.jpg

And lastly lets remove the bezel insert, for this I recommend to put the watch case into hot water, to lower the strength of the glue that holds the bezel insert with a bezel. After that use tooth pick and SLOWLY insert it into the gap between the bezel and bezel insert and go around the border, to loose the glue. This will ensure you will not break the bezel insert, so take your time !!!!!!

DSC_4052.jpg

Now lets remove the lume from the pearl

DSC_4053.jpg

And remove also the tube. It was glued inside but not well, I used heated tube remover that softened the glue and went out easy. When reassembling the tube, add MARINE EPOXY so it will hold there finally STRONG AND WATERPROOF !!

DSC_4054.jpg

Now lets paint that TEXT ! :) I used black ENAMEL paint let it dry and then use woollen cloth with small dip in acetone to remove the expense of the paint.

DSC_4055.jpg

And lets see the results

DSC_4058.jpg

DSC_4059.jpg

DSC_4060.jpg

I think it looks better :)

Now put back the crystal tension ring and apply small amount of UV glue on the tension ring, and push back crystal and then put the watch to UV light for few minutes rotating it.

DSC_4061.jpg

After that lets put back our freshly lumed and dried indexes back on the dial :)

DSC_4135.jpg

DSC_4136.jpg

I always add small drop of GS HYPO CEMENT under the index to ensure it will stay there !

DSC_4137.jpg

DSC_4138.jpg

DSC_4139.jpg

LOOKS GOOD ! :)

Now lets put back the dial back on movement, and lets assemble hands and regulate it.

DSC_4144.jpg

DSC_4145.jpg

DSC_4146.jpg

DSC_4147.jpg

DSC_4148.jpg

This is how it was, was loosing around 9 seconds per day crystal up and 19 crown down..

DSC_4149.jpg

DSC_4150.jpg

We managed to regulate it to this nice COSC values :)

Great now lets see how we have our case waterproofed

:) reassembly the Orings back to the tube, and caseback screw crown and lets test it on 4 BARs pressure test. PASSED ! :)

DSC_4228.jpg

After that lets reassemble the watch

:)

DSC_4237.jpg

Now lets create the pearl, I use mirror finish coating that doesn’t yellow or tarnish

:) After that reassemble the bezel insert with a watch. I use also dial sticker and GH hypo cement to hold good but also able to remove it.

Wow. It's easy to take for granted the amount of time and effort that goes into improving and repairing a watch. Thanks for the read.
