Removing date wheel overlay

Recommended Posts

Has anyone removed a rep date wheel overlay to realign, and lived to talk about it? Are they typically well glued or just a few spots here and there?

They usually separate really easily with a scalpel blade!

I'm at one of those "what the hell am I doing moments". Somehow I have to separate the overlay from the wheel without bending or wrecking the overlay...

If I can't figure it out, I'm reassembling it as is.

Agreed. Another problem I have run into is clearance: the overlay must sit beneath the rim of the dial spacer. I am trying to print my own vintage overlay and the paper thickness leaves it scraping against the dial back--it screws up the calendar change. Make sure your replacement overlay is sufficiently thin.

In this case, I'm not replacing it but simply repositioning it... or that's the idea. I still haven't figured out how to remove the overlay from the wheel yet.

You should be able to slip an exacto knife between the overlay and the date wheel (at the red arrow). Then, carefully pry it up.

I have this bad feeling I'm going to slice through the overlay...

No turning back because the damn overlay is blocking reseating the wheel itself.

I'll have play by play postings later.

You can reseat datewheel with overlay installed. I've done it successfully a few times. You just need a thin flat object to push the spring while you line up the teeth. There is a thread on this here or at RWI that I can't find right now. Sorry!

The Rolex date wheel overlay is "oversized" which makes it extremely difficult (for me) to get underneath it to move the spring.

On a side note, I just ordered another 6 watches from WI :)
