Removing AR coating

Recommended Posts

Brian1024

My watch arrived with a less than adequate ar coating and would like to know how to remove the outer ar coating. I don't have any money and would like to know if anyone has done this with things they just happened to have lying around that didn't cost a bunch of money?

Help plz... =(

I did it with a rag and polishing compound from Home Depot. Emery buffing compound and white rouge polishing compound.

You might give some tooth polish a try. Wasn't very difficult.

When you say tooth polish, do you mean tooth paste? i could try that, how long should it take?

Make sure that your crystal is 'sapphire' before you attack it, mineral glass can be scratched fairly easily.

If its got an AR coating it probably is sapphire though.

I've used 'Brasso' metal polish and Cape Cod polishing cloths in the past, both work quite well, if you've got a dremmel you can use a felt pad soaked in metal polish which will be a little easier. The green scouring pads also work well but can be hard work and you'll need to remove the crystal from the watch or you will probably make a mess of the case.

Good luck

Brian has a new BCE; I don't think he should be stripping the AR off the day he gets his watch. Leave it be for a while. New BCE's have good AR. If you decide to have it professionally done later, they'll strip off the old AR for you.

I got a BCE from Josh last year, a two tone with black dial and roman numerals, very nice looking watch with a fair amount of bling.

The AR was poor though, far too 'blue' and picked up marks very quickly.

Anyway, I did as much removal as I could but there were still some stains of some sort on the crystal so I sent it to Chieftang for his AR removal and re-coating service. It came back this week so I re-fitted it and WOW what a difference, pictures coming soon

Its not that i don't like it, its just that it is not completely covering the crystal, and when it stops covering the crystal it is very bad looking and not clear.

Did you remove the protective plastic film off the crystal?

Yeah tooth paste. As to how long? I don't know since I never tried tooth paste. You'll just have to give it a try and see if it works.

It took me about 20 minutes with buffing compound.

I removed the coating on my Milguass using a green kitchen scrubbing pad. I took a few minutes, but it did come off. The problem is, I didn't remove the crystal and my case is pretty scratched up. Andy know if it can be fixed? Will a buffing compound remove the scratches?

Cape cod cloth will buff out the scratches on the polished steel surfaces.

Thank you AD! I'm still very new to this hobby, so there's lots to learn. Truth is, I'm not even sure how to remove a crystal anyway. Perhaps for another thread, but how would I go about getting the tools necessary to take the covers off?

I've used toothpaste for things like this before, works especially well for removing scratches from CDs.

Found some FLITZ polish in a drawer, and spent a good ten minutes and got most of it off in the center. Right now its like an eclipse so i have to work on getting the coating off around the edges.

Also, I dont know how to upload pictures from my camera into a post, any help there?

A dremmel with a felt pad is great for AR removal, just soak the pad in metal polish and it will take the AR off nicely, another benefit is that when you touch the watch case it removes scatches instead of causing them.

Warnings - be extra careful with TT or FG watches as metal poish will go through the gold plating fast, also, don't start the dremmel at high speed or the liquid polish will be spread across your face in little dots.

As for pictures, you need a picture hosting web site like Imageshack or Photobucket and then put the URL to the picture inside 'img' and '/img' tags click 'reply' to a post that already has pictures to see the formatting. You can practice now by finding some dirty porn pics in a google search and posting them in section 8
