Hi,

 

Could someone explain to me what exactly the term "Jewel" means in relation to the watch movement.

Jewels are basically used as bearings to make the watch more reliable/accurate...:D

Jewels serve mutliple functions in watch movements. They prevent wear by preventing two parts from touching. If used as a cap they prevent movement of a shaft or other part. If installed on the end of a pivot point such as a pallet fork they provide balance and oscillation. If mounted on springs they provide shock protection. Varying shapes as well for different functions.

...and the jewels are pretty to look at too. Pallet jewels take a beating and it's amazing how long they last. :lol:
