Combat Luminor Homage to JohnG

Recommended Posts

avenger007

Here's my homage to an homage by JohnG. It's a Getat mini-fiddy case with a Uboat homage dial and hands. If you'd like to see a breakdown of the work that went into the dial conversion, you can check it out over at RWI:

Thanks to JohnG, Col, and Sconey for the inspiration, tutorials, and advice. I'm no JohnG, that I know for sure, but this was a lot of fun. Thanks for looking, folks.

Pretty much non-existent. The dial is very faint, the hands have no lume. I've got a spare dial and hand set that I plan on luming, but this one is actually keeping time at the moment, so I'm going to enjoy it for a while.

Nice work! I always liked that JohnG-build.

Where did you get the dial and hands?

Thanks, Kink. The dial and hands are a Uboat homage from Tat. I asked if he could sell them separately and he agreed. Jackson also has them.

BTW, you looked good in pink!

:thumbsup2:

Just coming back to this as I'm feeling that I want to build something...

The mini-fiddy case is 44mm?

And the dial fitted straight in without trimming? (Are there different size dials in this style?)

Sorry for all the questions, I can't get on RWI as I can't remember my password... ;):)

That kind TB had already PMd me by the time I was going to PM him! :fearlessleader:

How much was the dial and hands?

I'm a bit gutted that you have to trim the dial down, I don't think I'd have any way to do that :(

Also, I fear the mini-fiddy crystal explosion...

If it's 37.2mm to replace, what profile options would I have?

This High Dome one?

This High Dome one? (that apparently goes to 40mm but they only list up to 37mm

http://www.cousinsuk.com/catalog/4/2077/2089.aspx

Or just this one, that avenger used?

I believe the dial and handset together were $15 a set. I ordered two and went ahead and trimmed the second one down as well. If I wasn't planning on luming the second, I'd send it to you.

Once we got the process down, it was pretty quick and simple on the second one. Having the rotary tool helped...by hand...I'd think twice.

The domed plexi would have worked great if the retainer ring hadn't been fubar'd when we broke the remaining glass out of the case. I just had a watchsmith put in a simple domed mineral. It doesn't have the traditional "fiddy" dome and look, but I still like it. The replacement crystal from Tat has arrived now and I may swap it out, but the watch is running atm, and I'm a little hesitant to muck with it. LOL

If you have any more questions, X, I'd be happy to help.....of course the "Master" himself is around here somewhere. I am but an imitator.

cool, thanks for the info, and for the offer of help :(

I'm just pricing up tools and shizzle from the shop now - it's getting expensive... :fearlessleader: lol

It may be worth asking Tat about doing some of the heavy lifting for you. He offered to make a custom build for me using the Uboat dial, but I opted for the DIY approach. Glad I did for the experience.

Yeah, it is an option, but I think I'd quite like to do a build too, mainly so I can do it exactly how I want it and so I can have some more confidence about tackling relatively simple jobs!

Interesting to see that he might do it though, he certainly goes the extra mile on customer service
