KarmaToBurn 1,419 Posted September 11, 2013 My birthday is next weekend and I'm going to order myself an affordable gen as a gift. I think I've narrowed it down to these ones... Makara Octopus in bronze/green (pre-order for $375 + $15 shipping) Maranez Layan in brass/green with California dial (should be around $300 shipped when they get their re-stock in about 3 weeks) G. Gerlach Otago (about $300 used)
gran 198 Posted September 11, 2013 These are not my type of watches but the MAKARA has some promise
TheTinMan 13 Posted September 11, 2013 I've been looking at that Makara too. Might be a good deal from a new watch company, but who knows? I'd put my money on that Gerlach - I've only heard good things about their watches.
nev848 0 Posted September 11, 2013 Maranez for me seems to be a copy of the Kreigsmarine watch that the German U- Boat sailors had during the war.
PeteM 0 Posted September 11, 2013 Agree that bronzo is far too homagy for my tastes.... The first one looks too cheap looking with that finish... I do like the orange dial.... and the retro case style looks nice so its defo the GerLach for me mate....
Martinjogs 0 Posted September 11, 2013 Gerlach has some nice watches and a growing reputation for value, I don't care for this model but others look good.
twofake 0 Posted September 11, 2013 Gerlach looks the best .
KarmaToBurn 1,419 Posted September 11, 2013 These are not my type of watches but the MAKARA has some promise I'm hoping they get made. It looks like alot of value for the money with a Miyota 9015 movement, bronze case, superlumed indices and bezel, 200M water resistance, sapphire domed crystal and sapphire bezel insert. The first one looks too cheap looking with that finish... I do like the orange dial.... and the retro case style looks nice so its defo the GerLach for me mate.... I think bronze case looks weird because it's so new. It should develop a patina and darken up quite a bit after some wear. Gerlach looks the best . I do love the retro Doxa look. My only reservation is that the case is similar in shape to my Artego 300M
gB. 0 Posted September 11, 2013 G.Gerlach of course...
gB. 0 Posted September 11, 2013 This one! Yep, the RAF 303 as well. But it can't be got as was limited edition.
TheSav 2 Posted September 11, 2013 My choice out of that bunch would be the Gerlach.
James. 4 Posted September 12, 2013 none of these if it were I, I think you're in on the Obris exp? Or did the "30" turn you off?
jeffw69 0 Posted September 12, 2013 option d- none?
diegosaenz 0 Posted September 12, 2013 The Makara. The maranez crown is too big for my taste and the G.gerlach is just damn ugly.
KarmaToBurn 1,419 Posted September 12, 2013 none of these if it were I, I think you're in on the Obris exp? Or did the "30" turn you off? I decided against the Explorer because of the 30. The Pradata still looks promising though. option d- none? None? Never!
trailboss99 996 Posted September 12, 2013 Bloody enablers! 303 is sold out worse luck or I'd have ordered one. Instead I found this: http://sklep.gerlach.org.pl/index.php?route=product/category&path=67 Think I'd go the centre seconds version. Thoughts?
trailboss99 996 Posted September 12, 2013 Then again, this is rather nice: http://gerlach.org.pl/nasze-projekty/ms-batory/?lang=en
gB. 0 Posted September 12, 2013 Can't go wrong with either one TB. G.Gerlach is a top notch micro. Extremely high value for the dough. Dare I say better than Seiko...? :o
Mazz 62 Posted September 12, 2013 blasphemy........
gB. 0 Posted September 12, 2013 blasphemy........ True. I would say equally matched for best value for the dough. But G.Gerlach wins hands down in the original design area. Because let's face it, Seiko is nice but really a fancy homage brand that have bastardized every watch design known to man... :o
Timbohire 0 Posted September 12, 2013 Gerlach Otago not to bad the rest well crap!

gran 198 Posted September 12, 2013 Whats the origin of the Gerlach name? An 1884 catalogue proclaims G. Gerlach as the "Only Russian manufacturer of geodesic, mathematical, drawing and optical instruments," and lists his factory at 30 Tamka St. (his home) and the store at 2 Tchistaya St., Warsaw. (Warsaw was, of course, part of Russian Poland under the tzars at the time).
