A Noobs Attempt at Vintage Modding (pic heavy)

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys. Thought I would have a go at modding a Marina Militare I picked up a couple months ago. I love the look and "story" behind a vintage watch and wanted one of my own.

As I said, this started life as a 44mm Marina Miliatre from Jackson.

After breaking down the watch and removing the dial, I hit it with some olive drab water color to the dial markers.

I then brushed on some rust color to the dial itself. I then sealed the whole dial with a little "antique" mod podge to seal the paint.

While all that dried, placed the case in a box with rock, nails, screws etc. and shook it around until it was a little beat up. Finished the case up with some files and fine sand paper.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with my first attempt. Now for a new strap!

Very nice work. You could go with an authentically aged leather like my strap from gottahaverolex below. Or you could beat the bejabbers of the one you have!

Thanks. Looking at the pics, they don't really do the dial justice to be honest. Maybe, one day I will have a better set up.

That's what I'm finding out is great about reps. No one would ever drive a $10-$20k Panerai in a box with nails and screws. Or remove the dial and go at it with craft paints. But with a rep, if you completely fuck things up, you're out $200-$300.

Nice work.

Jackson cases are a great base to mod dude and you did a good job. Mellons has a great tutorial on here for case re shaping which is important if you're going vintage. The Jackson dials need to be replaced though. Over on HF guys are masters at painting and repro.. Look at Bigwaved or Irate from the UK. Here's one of mine I put together.

Thanks for the information. That is a stunner there sir. I have been looking at possibly replacing the dial itself, and I definitely need to get some new shoes for it. It should be a fun project.
