I believe the gen ones were a limited Ferrari Edition (would make sense). Pretty rare as far as I know, but don't go for the premium white or black exotic dial PN 'Tonas do.

Purchased on the street in NYC for 45$ in 2004 ... it is reproduction of 1994 Rolex Submariner 16610.

After 10 yrs of wearing ,,, it is appropriately "vintage." Still works great.

Not a fan of the red Paul Newman's mate to be honest, and more to the point, he never wore a red dialed exotic dial Daytona. That was just marketing by Rolex (just like the Steve McQueen Explorer II of which there is no evidence he ever wore).

Of course mate, and to the normal (non obsessive) person, a red dial PN would be a natural addition.

I'm about to buy one - with the white dials. I like the rarity aspect, but as said already it'll complete my collection of six! Later tonight I'm gonna post for sale my Black Bay, a Portuguese, my Steinhart OVM, and maybe a couple others. I've gone vinTona mad.

Thanks, ebzen02 (and Delaforce, Conex, and _DC_)! I was hoping to have added a black standard dial to the mix by now, but... Give me a year or two, unless a 6238 build gets in the way.

 

Also, I just want to clarify a couple of historical points:

 

Not a fan of the red Paul Newman's mate to be honest, and more to the point, he never wore a red dialed exotic dial Daytona. That was just marketing by Rolex (just like the Steve McQueen Explorer II of which there is no evidence he ever wore).

The red "Paul Newman" dials have never been acknowledged by Rolex (no surprise, as they never confirm anything!). More importantly, their authenticity is disputed by most of the vintage Rolex community. Patrizzi and a few other experts believe they're real, but I'd say they're less accepted than even the notorious 3CROC dials of John Mayer.

 

Also, Rolex has never linked Steve McQueen to the 1655. I doubt he ever wore an Explorer II; he seemed inseparable from his 5512. In fact, no one really knows where the "Steve McQueen" moniker came from, but I suspect it started somewhere in Italy.

Either way (and of course one has to be careful with any of the information they garner from the web) whatever the truth is, I would feel gutted for the buyer of this watch if the information you have gathered is true, and I'd spend some time pondering over the experts who authenticate for auctions,etc.

I've seen those auctions as well - some ridiculous cash dropped on those red dials. Whatever the truth really is, I just like the look of the red (white sub-dials for me) juxtaposed to the black/white/cream on all the other variations. And lets be honest, we're rep collectors - we're already making a lot of concessions on accuracy to begin with!
