gtwc 1 Posted September 15, 2010 Whilst it is lovey to see all the lovely wrist porn from new owners proudly showing off their latest aquisitions, what about the following......... How about a section devoted to long-term ownership reviews (rather like the car mags review vehicles after the owner has had and used them for 6/12 months, 20k miles etc). This would give a far more accurate picture of a reps durability and I'm sure that a lot of members would find this interesting as well (did the plating last, accuracy, how does the bracelet / case stand up to day-to-day wear, did any bits fall off etc). If it has been suggested before, then I apologise - after all I'm just a newbie........
greg_r 83 Posted September 15, 2010 Well, I'm sure quite a few of the watches in the wrist-check threads will have been around for quite a while. Most of my current watches are under 18 months old, but I used to have a Rolex day/date rep that lasted about 7 years before I ditched it - I only got rid of it because it needed a service and wasn't worth spending money on given how much better the mid-priced day/date models had gotten since 2001 when I bought the one I had. Cheapies can last 3 months or several years. It's just the luck of the draw. However, higher quality reps fitted with the better movements (ETA clones or gen ETAs) and serviced when required should last pretty much as long as a gen. None of my current watches (see list in sig) have given me any problems at all...
mulder 0 Posted September 15, 2010 I bought a Tag Heuer late last year and so far it keeps very acurate time (I only set it at each day light savings time change) It doesnt have a mark on it, the bands perfect and it gets worn at least 2 to 3 times per week. The band is a little to short for my liking and its not a great rep but has fooled a few people who looked at it. I can tell but thats because I know it is and its a little too plasticy in some places to be real and the Tag emblem is not sharp and crisp. Other than that it was as cheap as chips and keeps better time than some watches costing a way lot more. Its just like the day I bought it. David
gtwc 1 Posted September 15, 2010 Aha !! I am talking about a watch worn daily over an extended period of time - not a watch worn 2 or 3 times a week, or brought out on special occasions.
greg_r 83 Posted September 15, 2010 The Rolex day/date rep that I mentioned was worn nearly every day for 6 or 7 years (rotated with a couple of other watches for the first year although it was by far the most frequently worn, but certainly worn every day for the last 5 years I had it as I sold all my other watches). Most of us, however, own several watches and rotate between them - my previous comments still apply, however. Fitted with a good movement and services when needed (as you would with a gen) reps are as reliable as any other watch fitted with the equivalent movement. mulder 0 Posted September 15, 2010 I may have two wrists but I only wear one watch at a time and I have around a dozen different watches. I do like to change. Thats why it might see wrist time 2 or three times a week. My only watch I wear on a more regular basis is my work watch which is a casio and its had a pizzling over the last 5 or more years and is still going strong BUT its not what you want to know. onzenuub 309 Posted September 15, 2010 I did a review of a Tag Heuer Carrera Day Date, did wear it every day for the last 3/4 year. Still looks the same as n the review, still running great. The same for the Breitling Montbrillant of whici I wrote a review. It is now a few years old, been wearing it for a year almost every day. Still looks the same and running smoothly. The chopard where I wrote a review about has been on my wrist only a few times a year, but looks and runs great.
phaedo 0 Posted September 16, 2010 Been wearing my yellow dialed seawolf as a daily watch since December last year, I have a lawnmowing/gardening business, it is still pertty much accurate, not in 'brand new' condition given the workout it endures, but still looks pretty bloody decent. Although I have started to develop a rash the last few weeks on my wrist, think it is from the bracelet rubbing or something. Very annoying, not worn a watch in a week trying to let it heal. Capone 0 Posted September 16, 2010 It's also interesting to mention the type of movement which is in your rep since the quality differs a lot.
onzenuub 309 Posted September 16, 2010 All movements are Asian 7750.
NFleischer 4,355 Posted September 16, 2010 Here's 2 that are 31/2 years old- both working well, but not worn too often.
KBH 7 Posted September 16, 2010 I've been trying to kill an Eta SSD for almost 3 years and it's still like new. It gets worn almost every day except special occasions. And, it keeps time to about + or - 1 minute a week.
