PeterPC 0 Posted July 8, 2014 Was about to pull the trigger on building a 55 Fathoms from a SeikoSNZH55 (including bezel change) when I started wondering whether there was a quartz base watch I could use instead (be it Seiko or otherwise but preferably with date). As a Newbie to this whole modding thing, but with a preference to quartz (and a love of the Fifty/Fifty Five Fathoms look), I thought I'd seek the guidance of those far wiser than myself. plankton 1 Posted July 8, 2014 Now that's a tough question. I personally find myself liking the auto movements, just the mechanical time keeping is rather fascinating. Quarts will always be a better time keeper but that is like comparing a custom Harley to a BMW really. Your tastes will change over time I would bet so go with what you like. Daywatch 4 Posted July 8, 2014 Hi, was just starting to collect things for the 2nd (new dial has shipped yesterday) so get this watch: http://www.creationwatches.com/products/seiko-automatic-sports-89/seiko-automatic-sports-snzh55k1-snzh55-snzh55k-mens-watch-2304.html they ship worldwide 3-5 days with this dial http://www.10watches.com/apps/webstore/products/show/244957. The description says which movemnets it fits. For the snzh its a clean drop-in. The smooth sweeping seconds hand is one of the things that gives the watch it´s beauty. As long as You don´t take it off the wrist it will never stop. My other one:
PeterPC 0 Posted July 8, 2014 Thanks for these replies. I do chop and change my watches quite frequently, hence my preference for quartz. No need to keep changing the time. Suppose I'll just have to build the 55 to such a loving standard that I won't want to take it off.
Degsy1880 254 Posted August 17, 2014 (edited) i know its an old thread guys but a question if I purchase this watch http://www.creationw...watch-2304.html the DW is at three o'clock the dial link posted http://www.10watches...cts/show/244957 the DW is between 4 and 5. Can someone explain how it drops straight in?? would date function still work? sorry if its a dumb question. also for this FFF mod would you use the stock hand set, or order new hands and bezel? has anyone got one of these finished mods to post a pic. thanks D. greg_r 83 Posted August 17, 2014 the datewheel is, in fact, a wheel (yes, reallly! )- which means that the date aperture can match with it anywhere on its circumference as needed (logical when you think about it). The standard hands look fine with it (my blue FFF - seen below - has the standard hands), but I'll admit that if I built another one I'd change handset and bezel insert too...
