DR3M3L 6 Posted July 30, 2014 We all know the 2824 movement, it' designed by ETA and one of the most popular movements around. Ofcourse the Chinese made a clone of it, also knows as the Asian 2824 or A2824. BUT, this is not our only option around! Let's start with an overview of the movements that are simular and easy to swap: * ETA 2824 * Sellita SW200 (also known as the Oris 735) * Hangzhou 6301 * Seagull TW2130 (also known as the ST2130) * Miyota 8215 Let's start with the ETA 2824. ETA 2824 Twenty five jewels, made in Swiss, a true workhorse with a good reputation. Pricing around $250. Power reserve is 40 hours and it is 8 beats a second (28,800 BPH)! Shock resistance by using an incabloc to prevent damage of the balancewheel when the watch is dropped. Hand sizes are 150/90/25 There are three grades of this movement: * Standard * Elaborated * Top Standard grade Regulated in two positions with an average rate of +/- 12 sec/day. Elaborated grade Regulated in three positions with an average rate of +/- 7 sec/day. Top grade Regulated in five positions with an average rate of +/- 4 sec/day. Sellita SW200 Twenty five jewels, made in Swiss, just like the ETA version it has a great reputation and has proved to be a real workhorse. Pricing varies and these are hard to find, mostly around $200. Differences with the ETA: * One extra jewel (26 jewels) * 38 hours power reserve Hangzhou 6301 This one is made in China, also 8 beats a sec and are sold around $90. Same power reserve of 40 hours as the ETA. It is regulated to two positions within 15 sec/day. Differences with the ETA: * 26 jewels, one more then the ETA * Shockprotection using Novodiac method Seagull TW2130 China made, available around $100. Many people say those has been build in a better enviroment then the Hangzhou, but I can't confirm this. Some people found way to much oil in the Hangzhou and the Seagull should be build using the right amount of oil etc. But again, I can't confirm or deny this as it's something that could happen occasionally. It also runs at 8 beats/sec. 40 hours power reserve like the ETA! Differences with the ETA: * 26 jewels, one more then the ETA * Shockprotection using Novodiac method Miyota 8215 Made in Japan, available at $40-60 and a well known movement. Differences with the ETA: * 21 jewels * 6 beats per second * unpolished * 45 hour power reserve (Awesome!) * Rotor winding in just one direction (so the ETA will wind the mainspring faster using the rotor) * Shock protection using the Parashock method * Different hand sizes and stem height (So it's not directly interchangeable!!) * No hack function Quick overview of the most common specifications: Thanks for reading. DR3M3L 6 Posted July 30, 2014 you should add the most common rep movement. 2813 (copy of the miyota). great post! Read the title again :P It's about competitors of the 2824, the 2813 is not one of them..

BC1221 44 Posted July 30, 2014 oh my bad. i wouldnt consider the miyota a competitor of the 2824. to me, the miyota is a slightly better version of the 2813. same low beat rate. miyotas def arnt as loud as the 2813 though.
Mechwarrior 2 Posted July 30, 2014 no hack on 8215 ^_^ btw you can do the "poor man hack" with a little back pressure durind time setting ^_^

There are some watches offered with the choise between a 2824(clone) and a Miyota 8215, that's why I included the Miyota Just to show the difference between them. Mechwarrior 2 Posted July 30, 2014 imho 8215 is a lot better then 2813........very near to eta not "top grade"

nunu78 1,743 Posted July 30, 2014 Nice work Joran but plz add Miyota 9015 , as its a high beat movement like others discussed above.
BC1221 44 Posted July 30, 2014 imho 8215 is a lot better then 2813........very near to eta not "top grade" i agree. you can def tell the difference between a miyota and a 2813 at the stem or the sound the rotor makes. 2813s sound like a ice skating rink while the miyota is fairly quiet. i usually hear nothing but the winding sound in miyotas. BC1221 44 Posted July 30, 2014 2836-2 should be on this list as well. its usually the other ETA and clone movement offered by dealers
trailboss99 997 Posted July 30, 2014 Actually shock protection is more to save the balance staff than the balance wheel. The most susceptible part in a movement to sudden shock is the staff, they can be broken quite easily without shock protection. If you buy a pocket watch "not running" 8 out 10 times it will be a broken balance staff after being dropped due to the lack of shock protection.
