Aren 27 Posted November 11, 2010 We use marine air horns here in the mountains. Three blasts is an SOS. Personally, I don't usually run the bears off my property, but if my dogs are out, I prefer to use a marine air horn. It is deafening. My neighbors use their shotguns...seems like a waste to me and I don't like lead sprayed all over my yard poisoning the ground. If I don't have an air horn handy a couple of pots banged together will usually send the bears back into the woods. The air horn is just more effective...and more useful at a greater distance. It's resounding! If I use the pot banging method too much...the bears start to look at me like I am a lousy, noisy wind chime and continue eating my bird food. The other good thing about a back up air horn on a boat is that you can take it into the water with you...but trust you will never need it there. Either a lot of dry storage or enough room for some one small to stand up and shower. Also a port a potty for the girls in an emergency. Of course satellite radio for over in the Bahamas.
